Gareth Southgate perfect choice as England manager for one reason

Personality

Gareth Southgate is the perfect manager for England due to his personality according to Ray Lewington, who notes that the England manager is the ideal man to take on a job that so many others have failed at doing.

He thinks that Southgate is someone who can both make the players feel comfortable and talk to them along with also having a stern word and commanding a level of authority in the dressing room – and allow the players to flourish on and off the field – something has been seen this summer.

Standard Sport report he said: “Gareth is a good man first and foremost, but we’re in a strange industry.

“If you’re a nice bloke, people automatically think that, when the dressing-room door closes, you haven’t got that steel that is sometimes needed. I think Roy suffered from that a little. He had that ‘grandfatherly’ image, but he has another side to him.

“It’s the same with Gareth. Yes, he’s a nice bloke but he will do what’s necessary. He’ll keep it in the dressing room but if someone needs telling, he will do it.

“I saw that when Gareth was Palace captain. I can remember him losing his temper in the dressing room. As a player he used to put his foot in, he made tackles, he got around the pitch, he could mix it — he was Mr Reliable.

“He’s tough mentally. He embraces modern thinking and he has the courage of his convictions. Players need to know the manager is clear in what he wants to do and, provided they see that, they’ll follow. Gareth will be looking at the other teams involved in this World Cup and he will be saying to himself, ‘We could do well here’.”

Players

The England players seem happy and relaxed for the future and going into the tournament and it seems that the mood in the camp is the best it has been in a long time.

The media may be putting the usual pressure on the players and have certainly gone over the line when it comes to Raheem Sterling, but the camp seem to be united and the players are talking about playing their football and being creative in a way they’ve not done before.
