Danny Murphy explains how England can do well at the World Cup

Danny Murphy thinks that England simply have to attack and have a go if they want to do anything at the World Cup this summer.

He noted that too often in the past, England have been more worried about being conservative, and can’t do the same thing this summer – something both the players and manager Gareth Southgate has also mentioned when talking about their strategies.

He wrote in Standard Sport:England have been too cautious too many times at tournaments and if we are going to do well in Russia then we have to go for it a bit, loosen the reins.

We have a young side that is full of energy and legs and all our best players are in attacking areas. So Gareth Southgate should free them up and, if we go out, let’s go out having a go.

With any team you look at where your quality is and our strength lies in our attacking players. We have match-winners in Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Jesse Lingard, Dele Alli, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling; players who scare the hell out of defenders.

It is the pace and energy they have that teams will not like. Sterling and Rashford are electric, Vardy is lightning, Alli is like a Rolls-Royce when he gets going on those forward runs and Lingard is one of the best I have seen in a long time at knowing when to run in behind.”

Harry Kane will be a key player this summer and England fans know if the skipper is firing on all fronts, they have a huge chance.

The Belgium attack might be good, but the defence is shaky under Roberto Martinez, who is hardly renowned for his coaching in that department, and if Kane and the likes of Sterling and Rashford can use their pace to outwit the Belgians, they may well end up topping the group and giving themselves a shot at a better draw come the next round.

Kane has proven over and over again he’s far from a one season wonder, and doing it at a World Cup as England captain will serve as that added motivation for him.
