Official: Monaco confirm ‘agreement in principle’ for sale of Thomas Lemar

French outfit Monaco have this evening confirmed that the club have reached an initial agreement to sell Thomas Lemar to Atletico Madrid.

Sensational campaign

Lemar, a 22-year-old French international, set Ligue 1 and the Champions League alight during the 2016/17 season, with his combination of pace, pinpoint delivery and eye for goal having alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs to his talents.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Juventus and Barcelona were all linked with moves for the Principality star last summer, though the interest of the Gunners was the most concrete, with Arsene Wenger’s side having reportedly made 4 offers for Lemar.

The last of these bids came on the final day of the transfer window, when Arsenal had agreed a deal to send now-Manchester United star Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City.

The North London outfit tabled a mammoth 100 million Euro offer for Lemar as a result, though they were surprisingly rebuffed, with Monaco having already parted with the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko for big money during the summer.

Done deal

Despite Lemar having struggled to replicate his stellar form from the previous campaign during this past season (3 goals, 10 assists), it had nevertheless been heavily reported that Arsenal would return for the 12-time capped French international this summer, with Liverpool and Chelsea also continuing to be linked.

However, after surprise reports began to circulate that Lemar was in fact inching closer to a move to La Liga with Atletico Madrid over the last couple of days, the negotiations between Monaco and the Rojiblancos have today quickly come to fruition, with the former having confirmed this evening that an ‘agreement in principle’ has been reached between the clubs over the Frenchman’s transfer:

‘AS Monaco and Atletico announce that they have found an agreement in principle for the transfer of Thomas Lemar. The two clubs will continue to work in the coming days in order to find a definitive agreement.’
