‘Naive’ Mesut Ozil won’t talk – Oliver Bierhoff

‘Naive’ Mesut Ozil won’t talk – Oliver Bierhoff

Germany & 2018 World Cup

It’s just two days before the 2018 World Cup starts.

Can Germany retain the trophy in Russia this summer?

It seems fair to say that Germany have not enjoyed the best World Cup preparation.

On the pitch Germany only have one win in their last five. And that was a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia at home on Friday night.

Previously the Germans lost to Brazil and Austria, while drawing to France and Spain.

Germany have also had issues off the pitch involving Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.

A few weeks ago both Gundogan and Ozil met with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

That meeting sparked a backlash with German fans.

Oliver Bierhoff on Arsenal’s Mezut Ozil

In Sport Bild on Tuesday, senior German FA official Oliver Bierhoff has had his say on the Ozil and Gundogan issue.

Focusing more of his attention on the Ozil side of the story, Bierhoff has said he doesn’t expect the Arsenal star to talk about meeting Erdogan:

That’s his position (to stay silent). I assume that he’ll stick to this.

Does Bierhoff believe that Ozil’s stance – to dodge all questions – is the right one? He said:

Whether it’s right and good for him in this case is another matter. We have seen the consequences and he knows from experience.

Bierhoff also claimed that Ozil realises he made an error of judgement meeting Erdogan before the World Cup:

He made a mistake. But above all, the intention counts for us. He was not vicious, not politically driven, but naive, thoughtless.

Does Bierhoff believe the Ozil and Gundogan problems could filter through to the rest of the team?

I’m less worried about the team in general, but more about the two players. (Germany) already rely on Mesut and Ilkay a lot.
