Arsenal target Gelson Martins signs pre-contract agreement with Benfica

Portuguese outlet Record is today reporting that Arsenal target Gelson Martins has signed a pre-contract agreement with Benfica after being released from his Sporting contract.

Unrest at Sporting

Several weeks ago it was reported that a group of hooded supporters armed with sticks and belts attacked players and staff at Sporting’s training complex.

After said attacks, the club released a statement.

“Sporting Club of Portugal vehemently repudiate the incidents registered today at the Sporting academy.

“We cannot in any form be associated with acts of vandalism and aggression towards players, coaches and staff of the professional football department, nor with attitudes which constitute the practice of a crime.

“This is not and cannot be Sporting. We will take every measure we can to find those responsible for what happened and we will not shy away from demanding punishments for those who acted in this absolutely lamentable manner.”

In the wake of the attack, many Sporting players have come out and expressed a fear for their safety with many players looking to force a move away from the club.

Several Sporting stars have managed to do so with Martins being the latest player to be released from his contract

A bright star

Martins is 23 years of age and has spent his entire youth and senior career at Sporting.

So far, Martins has racked up 140 appearances for Sporting’s senior time, scoring 27 and assisting 30 in that time.

However, it was Martin’s 2017/18 season that was most impressive. In 52 appearances in all competitions, Martins scored 13 and assisted 13, a solid record for a right-winger.

Martins is very fast and has great ball control, he would have been a great addition to Arsenal’s new-look squad, however, the Gunners appear to have lost out to Benfica this time.
