Barcelona star: ‘I know that Neymar is happy in Paris, but…’

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic has this evening discussed the rumours that former Blaugrana teammate Neymar could join Real Madrid this summer.

Following months of speculation, South American attacker Neymar finally made the move from Barcelona to French giants Paris Saint-Germain in August of last year, for a world-record fee of 222 million Euro.

The 26-year-old went on to enjoy a scintillating start to life in the French capital, racking up an incredible 25 goals and 16 assists in his first 27 appearances between Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

However, a broken metatarsal bone in his right foot, picked up during a clash with Marseille in February, has seen Neymar sidelined ever since, derailing what looked set to be a spectacular debut campaign at the Parc des Princes (though he was nevertheless named the Ligue 1 Player of the Year):

On the move?

Despite his brilliance on the pitch this season, though, reports have nevertheless been rife in both France and Spain that the fleet-footed attacker could be set to depart Paris this summer, less than a year after his record-breaking arrival.

The early-season troubles between he and Edinson Cavani were already rumoured to have seen Neymar considering his position with PSG, with the clear lack of progress made by the recently-crowned Ligue 1 champions in the Champions League this season having also reportedly left the Selecao star frustrated.

‘Hope not’

As has been heavily covered in the media, Real Madrid have been the club most persistently touted as a potential destination for Neymar, with Los Blancos known to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements amid mounting speculation surrounding the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

And one of the PSG star’s former teammates, in the form of Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, has today weighed in on the rumours that Neymar could make the move to his side’s arch-rivals this summer.

Speaking in an interview with Marca, Croatian international Rakitic explained:

‘Neymar to Real? I hope not, but I understand that folk must follow their desires and make their decisions. ‘

‘I know that Neymar is very happy in Paris, but I also knew he was happy in Barcelona and still left.’

‘If I had to choose, I’d prefer him to stay in Paris.’
