Tottenham Hotspur handed warning by Gary Lineker

Tottenham Hotspur have been told this is a key summer for them – and remaining the same when it comes to wages and the way they pay players will not go well.

Gary Lineker has noted that big players want to have wages that are on a parity with other big clubs, and should Spurs fail to pay them – something that looks like happening after the Toby Alderweireld saga, then they will end up losing their key players.

Standard Sport report he said: “It’s a seminal moment and I have been saying that for some time.

“They have got lots of big stars there and if they want to keep them and have a go, then they need to invest a little bit and need to probably pay the wages they can get elsewhere.

“Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how loyal you are. If the team isn’t successful and isn’t competing on the same wage level as you get elsewhere, then you are ultimately going to lose the players and they will go elsewhere.

“I think Pochettino was right to say what he said and I think it is saying something about himself as well, because if that ambition is not matched then I suspect he might depart and if he departs I can see some the big stars following.

“It’s a big moment for Tottenham, Daniel Levy and the owners.”

Of course, it’s not just about the money the club are willing to pay players – manager Mauricio Pochettino is also keen to get some top players and big names into the club this summer and really take them to the next level – and he won’t be able to do that without the funds.

The manager has already issued a warning to the board, noting that if he doesn’t get the money he needs, then he will consider his future and that if nothing else should serve as a huge warning to Spurs.
