In the 142 previous editions of the Preakness Stakes the betting favourite has prevailed on 72 occasions.

Kentucky Derby winner Justify will look to make it 73 from 143 in the 2018 running of the Preakness as he looks to set up a shot at the Triple Crown in June’s Belmont Stakes.

The undefeated colt is a strong favourite ahead of Saturday’s race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

Trainer Bob Baffert will be hoping Justify is handed a decent post position when the draw takes place on Wednesday.

Here are all the details for the post positions draw:

Date: Wednesday, May 16

Time: 5 p.m. ET, 10 p.m. BST

Post positions should not necessarily make a difference but the received wisdom is that the extreme outside or inside are unfavourable.

Cloud Computing won from gate two in last year’s Preakness to deny favourite and Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming his shot at the Triple Crown.

Per Mike Dempsey of of OddsShark, the most successful gate in recent years has been the eight post, which has produced eight winners in the last 41 years, while only four winners have broken from 10 or wider since 1986.

Justify ran a hugely impressive race at Churchill Downs to win the Kentucky Derby by two and a half lengths to Good Magic.

Jockey Mike Smith masterminded a near-perfect run for the three-year-old, steering Justify to the front with four furlongs to go and drawing away from the field down the stretch.

He has more than enough pace, stamina and ability to do the same over 9.5 furlongs at Pimlico, and the smaller field should benefit the favourite as it should make for an easier getaway.

Justify could likely win the second leg of the Triple Crown from any gate but Baffert and his team will take nothing for granted as they look to secure another major victory.
