Heartbreaking scenes as Dimitri Payet forced off through injury in UEL final

Everyone was left feeling sorry for Marseille captain Dimitri Payet after he left the pitch in tears following what looked to be a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman is Marseille’s star man and has been pivotal in their success in the Europa League this season.

He has scored several important goals and has impressed everyone just as he did back in his West Ham days.

Though, it wasn’t to be a fairytale ending to the season for the Frenchman, instead, it would be a heartbreaking end.

That is because the player had to be withdrawn just after the 30-minute mark and you could tell just how much it meant to him.

The player knew instantly that the problem was not good but attempted to get up before realising his final was over.

He quickly took the captains armband off and head off the pitch with tears in his eyes as he was consoled by the majority of his teammates.

World Cup implications

Another big talking point was about the players World Cup chances.

Having shown his quality throughout the Europa League campaign, he likely would have at least got into the squad for the competition in Russia.

Didier Deschamps is set to name his squad for the World Cup this week and that could mean that Payet misses out completely.

That would add salt to wounds for Payet who will have suffered a horrific double blow.

Contrasting emotions

On the other hand, Payet’s substitution has been a positive for Atletico Madrid who are 1-0 up in the game.

Antoine Griezmann put the Spanish side ahead in the game after a mixup in the Marseille defence and they have so far looked the better team.

Though, Marseille will certainly not go down with a fight in the second half.
