Jameis Winston will remain with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for at least an extra season after the team picked up his fifth-year option, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Stroud noted Winston will make $20.922 million which is guaranteed against injury.

The quarterback is coming off a disappointing 2017 where he set career lows in 3,504 yards and 19 touchdowns, missing three games due to a shoulder injury. Despite high expectations, the Buccaneers finished just 3-10 with Winston under center.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported his relationship with head coach Dirk Koetter was “not in a good place.”

On the other hand, the 24-year-old set a personal best with a 92.2 quarterback rating thanks to an improved completion percentage while also cutting down on interceptions.

With his injury, an ineffective run game and inconsistency at receiver outside of Mike Evans, there were outside factors holding him back.

Still, the 2015 first overall pick obviously has plenty of upside he is still trying to reach, and the Bucs believe he can hit that next level.

Winston now has two more seasons before potentially hitting free agency, so he can take that time to prove what he can do in this league. If he can improve his efficiency and possibly be a part of some more team success, he could be in for a big pay day in a few years.
