FA considering retrospective action against Chelsea star following Southampton clash

According to reports in the English media this evening, the FA are considering taking retrospective action against Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso, following the Spaniard’s horror challenge on Southampton’s Shane Long on Saturday afternoon.

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea travelled to St. Mary’s for the first of the weekend’s Premier League fixtures, with a thrilling affair having eventually seen the Blues overturn a 2-goal deficit courtesy of a blitzing 8-minute spell in the second-half.

Substitute Olivier Giroud proved the catalyst that the capital giants were crying out for, grabbing a brace after replacing Alvaro Morata on the hour mark.

The French hitman notched his side’s first of the day in the 70th-minute, diving bravely to nod home a whipped Marcos Alonso cross from the left, before Eden Hazard’s superb touch and finish were added to just minutes later by another excellent strike from Giroud.

Moment of madness

However, while Chelsea were, in the end, able to turn things around, things could so easily have proven far more difficult for the Blues, had Marcos Alonso rightly been given his marching orders for a horrendous challenge on Shane Long on the stroke of half-time.

The Spaniard drove his studs into the calf of Saints’ striker Long on the halfway-line, making absolutely no effort to win the ball, in a tackle that was quickly labelled as ‘disgraceful’ and ‘horrific’ by fans and pundits alike.

However, Mike Dean, referee at St. Mary’s on Saturday, failed to spot the incident, with Alonso having seemingly escaped scot-free.

Ban incoming?

But, as per an update courtesy of journalist Simon Phillips this evening, the FA are currently reviewing the incident, with the possibility still existing that the Chelsea stopper could be hit with a retrospective punishment:
