Why Providence can cover the spread

Providence is back in the Big Dance for the fifth year in a row and has played in three consecutive OT games, capped by the tough loss to Villanova. But prior to that, the Friars upset the third-ranked Xavier Musketeers 75-72 as seven-point underdogs in the Big East tournament semifinals, and they have gone 5-1 against the spread in their last six games.

Providence head coach Ed Cooley has done an outstanding job with this program, leading them to the postseason in six of his seven years at the school, including one NIT appearance.

Why Texas A&M can cover the spread

Texas A&M saw its three-game winning streak snapped with a 71-70 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the second round of the SEC tournament. The Aggies were 3.5-point favorites in that game and had covered two of their previous three.

However, the extra time off should benefit them greatly in this spot, as the Friars had to play three games in three days to get to the Big East title game, and all of them went to OT. Texas A&M is also an impressive 17-3 straight up in its last 20 games when listed as a 3.5-point favorite or more, with one of those three losses coming versus Alabama.

Smart betting pick

Providence has more experience in the NCAA tournament lately, which should be a key advantage here. The Friars may not have advanced far in the Big Dance, but Cooley will make sure his players are prepared and not suffering from a Big East tournament hangover.

Meanwhile, the Aggies last went to the NCAA tournament two years ago, which was their first appearance since 2011. Providence is 5-0 ATS in its last five games against teams with winning records, so take Cooley’s squad to cover.

March Madness betting trends

The total has gone over in seven of Texas A&M’s last 10 games.

The total has gone under in seven of Providence’s last nine games as an underdog.

Providence is 5-0 ATS in its last five games against teams with winning records.
