Romelu Lukaku apologies after Sevilla ‘hiding’ comments

Romelu Lukaku after Sevilla

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku gave a forthright interview on BT Sports after losing to Sevilla.

Lukaku scored United’s goal in a 2-1 defeat to the Spaniards in the Champions League.

Sevilla progressed through to the quarterfinals thanks to a second-half double from sub Wissem Ben Yedder.

After the game Lukaku made the following comments:

Somethings were wrong with some players, some players were hiding.

The deception was very big. You know we started the game well but we let them get a bit of control in the game. We had a few half chances but we didn’t score.

Man United star backtracks on Instagram

Many accused Lukaku of calling out his team mates for a lack of effort against Sevilla.

And, to be fair, that criticism seemed fair enough. Paul Pogba, for example, was particular poor after he came off the bench as a sub.

Yet Lukaku has tried to clarify his comments on Instagram on Wednesday.

In an early morning post, the Belgian was walked back his comments saying:

Never will i criticise my teammates! Hiding your face when you’re upset in the dressing room is normal.

Is that a helpful post?

Some Man United fans will have appreciated buying into Lukaku as a player who can call out his team mates if they play below par.

Lukaku seems to be distancing himself from that character.
