Man United readying move for highly-regarded Valencia defender

As per a report from Tuttosport, Manchester United are eyeing a summer swoop for Valencia defender Jose Gaya.

Flying-full back

Gaya, a 22-year-old left-back, has spent his entire career to date the Mestalla, having joined Valencia as a youngster in 2006.

He broke into the club’s first-team setup for the first time in 2012, and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most highly-sought after stoppers in La Liga.

To this point in the current campaign, Gaya has managed 29 outings across all competitions, playing a key role in the impressive season currently being enjoyed by Los Che (4th in La Liga, 11 points clear of 5th-placed Sevilla).

Old Trafford bound?

The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea have all been linked with moves for Gaya in the past, but, to this point, the defender’s reportedly steep price-tag, coupled with an injury-plagued season in 2015/16, have seen the Spanish U21 international stay put.

But, as per the aforementioned report from Tuttosport today, Valencia could face a battle to hold onto Gaya once again this summer, with Manchester United plotting a move for the attack-minded stopper.

The Red Devils are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements at full-back, with Matteo Darmian seemingly headed for the Old Trafford exit door, Luke Shaw struggling for game-time, and Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia (who are both wingers by trade) entering the twilight years of their respective careers.

As such, Gaya is reportedly high up on the defensive wishlist of United boss Jose Mourinho, with the Premier League giants expected to spend big once again this summer, following their shock Champions League last-16 exit at the hands of Sevilla last night.
