European heavyweights queue up for Liverpool midfielder

As per a report from Italian outlet Tuttosport, Serie A giants Juventus risk losing out on the signature of Liverpool midfielder Emre Can, due to growing interest in the German from some of Europe’s other top clubs.

Reds mainstay

Can, a 24-year-old German international, has been on the books at Anfield since 2014, when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen.

However, his contract with Liverpool is due to expire this summer, and there has so far been little to no progress made towards a new deal.

Bianconeri pursuit

It has long been known that Italian champions Juventus are keen to take Can to Turin, with CEO Beppe Marotta having previously confirmed the club’s interest.

Fellow suitors

Along with Juve, all of Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Inter Milan have been rumoured to maintain an interest in the services of Can, though the Old Lady have always been viewed as holding a clear lead in the race for his signature.

‘Have to accept it’

Speaking in an interview with DAZN in January, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp did little to dampen rumours that his side’s midfield powerhouse looks set for a summer departure from the club, with the German tactician explaining:

‘He’ll stay beyond the winter. Emre is still a young lad but he has developed into a great player and is very important for us.’

‘Sometimes a player just wants to sit out his contract. That’s not cool for the club, but there are moments in which you have to accept it.’

‘And as long as the player behaves like Emre does, then I have absolutely nothing to complain about. He gives everything he has and identifies with the club.’

Rumours stemming from Italy over recent weeks suggested that Juventus had given Can an ultimatum to give the club his word regarding joining in the summer, but, surprisingly, an announcement has yet to come.

As such, as per the aforementioned update from Tuttosport, Can’s dragging his heels has allowed some of Europe’s other top clubs to enter the fray, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich now expressing an interest in the 20-time capped international.

Can and his entourage are said to be assessing all options, meaning the German’s move to Juventus now looks far from a sure thing.
