Arsene Wenger needs Chelsea to beat Barcelona to screw over Mauricio Pochettino

The race for Champions League

As the final weeks of the season come into view, the race for Champions League qualification heats up.

Next season will see a change in the entry rules to the Champions League.

From a Premier League perspective, the top four finishers in the division will automatically go into the UCL group phase. EPL sides have been exempted from qualifiers.

However there could be up to five teams from the Premier League in next season’s Champions League if Arsenal can win the Europa League.

Barcelona vs Chelsea

On Wednesday night in the Camp Nou, Chelsea will be hoping to knock Barcelona out the UCL.

1-1 from the first leg, Chelsea are second favourites to progress from the last-16 tie.

Yet Arsenal fans should all be supporting Chelsea’s efforts in Spain, as it offers the Gunners an out in spoiling Tottenham’s season.

Arsenal vs Tottenham

After 30 rounds of the Premier League, Tottenham are in third on 61 points while Arsenal are sixth on 48 points.

But the possibility still remains that Spurs finish the season in the top four, but Arsenal manage to ‘steal’ the Champions League place away from the Lillywhites.

It all revolves around the following scenario.

If Tottenham finish fourth, Chelsea or Liverpool finish fifth and Arsenal finish sixth, and if Chelsea or Liverpool win the Champions League and Arsenal win the Europa League, Spurs will fail to qualify for the Champions League.

To be clear, in the above scenario, five Premier League teams would be in next season’s UCL: Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Of course, this is a major long shot, however the possibility of Tottenham finishing fourth and not qualifying for the Champions League remains alive.
