The dumbfounding comments of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho following his side’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Sevilla have gone viral online this evening.

The two sides went head to head at Old Trafford, having played out a 0-0 stalemate in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Spain 3 weeks ago.

Manchester United have been in excellent form since their disappointing showing at the Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, having earned victories over all of Chelsea, Crystal Palace and, most recently, Liverpool.

Sevilla, meanwhile, have picked up 2 wins and 2 losses from their 4 fixtures since the clash, including a harrowing 5-2 defeat at home to Atletico Madrid and a 2-0 loss to Valencia in their last outing.

The starting XIs of both sides were announced an hour prior to kick-off, with Jose Mourinho having sprung a couple of surprises.

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial were seemingly only fit enough for the bench, while Juan Mata and Scott McTominay both dropped out for Jesse Lingard and, controversially, Marouane Fellaini:

Sevilla, meanwhile, lined up as follows:

The opening 45 minutes this evening saw both sides struggle to create clear-cut chances, with Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi the standout performer in a half badly lacking in quality.

Manchester United’s fans were understandably up in arms regarding the flat performance of their side, with the lack of control gained by Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park particularly noteworthy.

Shock result

The second-half saw United come out with more intent in attacking areas, but look susceptible to Sevilla on the counter-attack.

And it was a Sevilla counter that saw the score opened for the first time in over two and a half hours between the tie’s two legs, as substitute Wissam Ben Yedder made an immediate impact, taking the ball into his path on the edge of the box and brilliantly slamming home past David De Gea.

Incredibly, it was 2-0 just minutes later, as a corner flicked on to the back post saw Ben Yedder cement his name in Sevilla’s history books, heading home past the unlucky De Gea and putting the tie out of United’s reach.

Romelu Lukaku did manage to restore a glimmer of hope for the hosts with 5 minutes to go, but it was too little, too late, as Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League in embarrassing circumstances.

Mourinho mind-games?

In the aftermath of the clash, large sections of Man United fans pointed the finger at manager Jose Mourinho for his part in their shocking showing this evening, with the Portuguese tactician’s defensive, negative tactics having cost the Red Devils in the worst way possible.

However, speaking in his post-match press conference tonight, Mourinho himself bizarrely suggested that the club’s supporters should not be overly disappointed with their exit from the Champions League, claiming that being knocked out of Europe’s top-tier competition isn’t ‘anything new for this club’.
