‘Juventus were like Swansea vs Liverpool’

Juventus 2 – Tottenham 2

It was an epic night in Turin on Tuesday in the Champions League.

After nine minutes, Tottenham’s UCL hopes looked dead and buried.

After beating Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the groups, Spurs started the knockout phase incredibly poorly.

A lapse of concentration gave Gonzalo Higuain acres of space from a third minute corner.

Higuain doubled Juve’s lead from the penalty spot after Ben Davies gave away a spot-kick.

But then Spurs staged a fightback. Harry Kane found the target before the break, while Christian Eriksen’s second half free-kick left questions being asked of Gigi Buffon.

‘It was like Swansea vs Liverpool’

Tony Cascarino went after Juventus in the Times on Wednesday.

Juventus came into the match having conceded just once in 16 matches.

Moreover, the Bianconeri, who lost the Champions League final last season to Real, are gunning for their seventh straight Scudetto.

Yet Cascarino compared Max Allegri’s side to Swansea. He wrote:

Whatever happens in the second leg of this tie, Juventus won’t win the Champions League. I don’t think they’ll come close.

The way they played after going two goals up reminded me of Swansea City taking on Liverpool; ten players stationed behind the ball, their team cramped inside a 35 or 40-yard area.

Watching them lose possession and then retreat en masse was extraordinary for a team of that stature and they’ll get punished for it.
