Liverpool vs Man City

When the team sheets came out on Sunday before Liverpool vs Man City, there was one shock in the Sky Blues XI.

Pep Guardiola picked German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan ahead of David Silva.

Gundogan impressed for Man City against Burnley last weekend. Yet the absence of Silva was still a shock.

The full team sheets were as follows:

Liverpool: Karius; Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Robertson; Can, Wijnaldum Oxlade-Chamberlain; Mane, Salah, Firmino

Subs: Mignolet, Milner, Klavan, Lallana, Ings, Solanke, Alexander-Arnold

Man City: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph; Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Gundogan; Sane, Sterling, Aguero

Subs: Bravo, Zinchenko, Danilo, Mangala, D Silva, Bernardo, Diaz

Why David Silva missed the Anfield match

Of course, Silva has recently been missing for personal reasons.

The Spanish midfielder revealed that his wife gave birth to their premature baby.

However – happily – that wasn’t the reason why Silva wasn’t in the starting XI against Liverpool.

According to reports, Silva missed the game because he was suffering with a stomach bug.

The illness isn’t thought to be a long term issue.

Liverpool: Karis in, Mignolet dropped

Hours before the big Super Sunday match at Anfield, rumours spilled out on Liverpool’s XI against Man City.

Earlier in the day it was confirmed that Liverpool would have to wait to see Virgil van Dijk in the Premier League.

The 75 million pound Dutch defender scored the winner in front of the Kop against Everton in the FA Cup.

But the former Southampton defender was forced to miss the Man City game with a hamstring issue.

Elsewhere, German goalie Loris Karius started against Man City while Simon Mignolet was dropped.

Jurgen Klopp explained that decision as follows:
