Virgil van Dijk tipped to follow Coutinho’s Liverpool path

Liverpool fans might be overjoyed with the signing of Virgil van Dijk, but according to Graham Souness, they shouldn’t get too excited just yet.

That’s because the Sky Sports pundit thinks the defender is one of the top players around, and could potentially be even better – meaning he won’t be at Liverpool for long, with Souness even comparing it to the Philippe Coutinho situation, noting the player did well for Liverpool, attracted interest from Barcelona and then left to further his career.

Souness said on Sky Sports: “I really rate him highly, I’m surprised Liverpool ended up with him,

“I thought even the big two in Spain might have come sniffing for him.

“Definitely Man City, I think they could do with him or someone like him. There’s not too many Virgil van Dijk’s out there.

“I was like most people when he came from Scotland where it was all too easy for him, I thought he would find life difficult, he didn’t, it’s the same Virgil van Dijk.

“He’s someone that plays that would appear to always have another gear available to him.

“He’s never extended in anything he does and that’s a great sign of a football player when he makes it look so easy.

“I think he’s not going to solve all of Liverpool’s ills defensively but he will go a large way to solving many of those problems.

“I regard him as potentially being a superstar.

“I’ll tell you how far I will go, I think in a couple of years they will be possibly in the Philippe Coutinho situation again. Given his age he can only get better barring a bad injury.”

One massive blow for Liverpool is the fact that Van Dijk will miss the Manchester City game with a tight hamstring, and it seems that they will have to resort to their less able centre backs, with the fans certainly having a fair bit to say about that.

Van Dijk is, as Souness says, a huge coup for the club and not only have they managed to get in a player who will strengthen their back four in no uncertain terms, they’ve also landed a player who could have gone to a rival side and made them even stronger.
