Jaguars Will Kneel Before Anthem in Week 4 vs. Jets

The Jacksonville Jaguars‘ players announced Saturday they will kneel prior to the playing of the national anthem during their Week 4 game against the New York Jets on Sunday.

The team released the following statement on behalf of the players:

After praying for change, the players said they will stand during the anthem Sunday and continue to do so for the remainder of the season.

Several Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens players knelt during the playing of the United States national anthem when they met in Week 3 in London.

There was an increased amount of anthem demonstrations across the NFL in Week 3 on the heels of President Donald Trump’s commenting on the matter, per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b—h off the field right now? Out! He’s fired! He’s fired!'”

On Saturday, Trump tweeted about the importance of standing during the anthem:

The Jaguars appear poised to take a page out of the Dallas Cowboys‘ book with regard to the demonstration they have planned for Sunday.

Prior to their Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals, Cowboys players, personnel and even owner Jerry Jones locked arms and knelt. They then stood for the playing of the anthem.

The Jags are tied for first place in the AFC South with a record of 2-1, and with a win over the Jets on Sunday, they would start 3-1 for the first time since 2007.

Saquon Barkley Goes for 221 All-Purpose Yards, 2 Total TDs vs. Indiana

Jeff Roberson/Associated Press

Penn State superstar running back Saquon Barkley took the opening kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown en route to 221 all-purpose yards in the Nittany Lions’ 45-14 victory over Indiana on Saturday at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania.

The Heisman Trophy contender racked up 56 yards on 20 carries and 51 yards on four catches in the blowout win. He also threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to DaeSean Hamilton in the fourth quarter on a trick play.

His electrifying start on special teams was highlighted by the Big Ten Network:

Barkley developed into one of the top offensive playmakers in the nation over the past two years. Returning kicks has been a work in progress, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise a player with so much game-breaking speed and agility is now making an impact in the game’s third phase.

On Friday, Andrew Rubin of the Daily Collegian passed along comments from the running back about his progress, which was on full display right away Saturday.

“So far throughout the year I am getting better and better every single day, every single practice at seeing the field,” Barkley said. “Obviously it is very different from running back. I’m just going to have to continue to trust the system.”

Otherwise the Hoosiers defense did a terrific job of keeping him in check. They frequently stacked the box to eliminate the running lanes and put the pressure on Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley to beat them over the top.

Barkley didn’t have a run longer than eight yards in the contest. In most cases he was met by multiple defenders right near the line of scrimmage and had to fight just to gain a couple of yards a pop.

That said, even in games where the 20-year-old New York City native doesn’t post monster offensive numbers he tends to do a couple of things that have a “wow factor.”

Penn State On BTN spotlighted one of those moments—a first-quarter catch-and-run:

The other was his unexpected touchdown pass, as highlighted by the Big Ten Network:

Ultimately, the performance probably won’t have a major impact on his Heisman candidacy. While his overall numbers were down from last week’s 211-yard rushing day against Iowa, his kickoff return and passing TDs are the type of plays that can help build a wide-ranging Heisman case at season’s end.

Barkley and the Nittany Lions return to action next Saturday when they travel to face Northwestern at Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois.

Donald Trump Says It’s ‘Very Important’ NFL Players Stand During National Anthem

Michael Dwyer/Associated Press

Donald Trump is not finished with his feud against the NFL and its players.

The president once again tweeted about potential protests Saturday, noting the need to respect the flag:

All 32 teams had some demonstration before or during the national anthem during Week 3, with over 100 players kneeling. Three teams stayed off the field during the ceremony, while many others locked arms in unity.

Players have been kneeling during the national anthem since the start of last season, with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick initiating the act to protest racial injustice. The discussion was then brought into the spotlight last week after Trump told supporters at a rally he thought those who kneel should be fired.

As NFL players continued to defy him, Trump continued to tweet about the issue. According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, 24 of his 51 tweets over a four-day period regarded the NFL and the anthem, more than three times any other issue.

While it remains to be seen whether teams will continue to hold massive demonstrations as they did last Sunday and Monday, several players have announced their intentions to continue protesting.

I plan to kneel until the president apologizes for the comments that he made,” Tennessee Titans receiver Rishard Matthews said on NFL Live Tuesday, per Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.

The Pittsburgh Steelers said they will be standing for the anthem after mostly remaining in the tunnel last week.

Byron Scott’s House Reportedly Robbed in Los Angeles

Alex Gallardo/Associated Press

The house of former NBA player and coach Byron Scott was reportedly broken into Friday night, with burglars making off with plenty of valuables.

According to TMZ Sports, criminals took Scott’s watches and guns as well as purses and shoes belonging to his girlfriend.

This is the latest in an extended list of celebrity homes that have been robbed in Los Angeles over the past year, including sports personalities Yasiel Puig and Derek Fisher.

According to the report, no one was home during Scott’s home invasion.

Scott lives in Hermosa Beach and has spent most of his basketball life in the area. After going to high school in Inglewood, he played 11 of his 14 NBA seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers where he helped win three NBA titles in the 1980s.

He also spent time with the Indiana Pacers and Vancouver Grizzlies but ended his career in Los Angeles in 1996-97.

The 56-year-old then had an extended career as a head coach for four different organizations, including with the Lakers from 2014-16. He was fired in 2016 following a 17-65 season. He told TMZ Sports in August he would have no interest in returning to the coaching world.

Presidents Cup 2017 Leaderboard: USA 1 Point from 7th Consecutive Title

Julio Cortez/Associated Press

The United States is within one point of winning the 2017 Presidents Cup after a second straight day of overpowering performance Saturday at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Team USA opened Saturday’s action with a second consecutive unbeaten session by going 3-0-1 against the International team in the morning foursomes. The Americans followed it up with more strong play in the afternoon fourball, posting a 3-1-0 record to further increase their lead to 14.5-3.5.

A single victory during Sunday’s 12 singles matches will give the United States its seventh Presidents Cup triumph in a row. The Internationals must sweep tomorrow’s fixtures to take the Cup.
